Have you visited the Museum of Biblical Art?

This past Saturday in Dallas, TX  I stumbled across an incredible find that I personally didn’t know even existed: The Biblical Arts Center. This museum was founded in 1966 o show and display Biblically themed artwork. The museum serves all backgrounds and denominations, and is a cultural crossroads using art for tolerance and understanding. Archaeological exhibits, decorative art from Israel and the Holy Lands, one of the largest displays of Jewish ceremonial art and worship articles in the Southwest, and contemporary religious art by African-American and Hispanic artists fill eleven galleries housed on Boedecker Drive next to Dallas’s famed NorthPark Center shopping mall.

The current main attraction is a mural by internationally-known artist Ron DiCianni titled “The Resurrection” and it is stunning. Completed in California in 2010, the dramatic oil painting shows Christ emerging from His tomb. To either side are two angels and a host of Biblical figures including Moses, Abraham, Isaiah, and Esther. Also currently on exhibit is one of only a few bronze reproductions of Michaelangelo’s famous Pieta sanctioned by the Vatican, intricately-wrought Monstrances spanning the centuries, and early woodcuts, etchings, and medieval manuscripts. The Art Conservatory and Restoration Laboratory have viewing windows through which one can watch the restoration process of damaged artwork, and while I was there a class in Icon Writing was in progress.

The museum complex also features a Damascus Gate and Ceremonial Entryway, the Golden Ziggurat surrounded by 36 cathedral windows which softly illuminate the Atrium, a gift shop with jewelry, gifts, and prints of the artists’ works – many of them signed – and this year the Center will unveil its “Via Dolorosa” exterior meditation walk with 14 life-sized bronzes by sculptor Gib Singleton. A Bible Meditation Garden featuring a variety of native plants, trees, and herbs of Israel is also planned.

A wedding rehearsal was underway when I arrived, and I learned that the museum offers more than 25,000 feet of event and exhibit space for special events. There is the Main Gallery Ballroom with specialty lighting (seats up to 300), the Atrium, or the private Library with its gas fireplace. In addition, a new catering kitchen is easily accessible to the ballroom and the museum is closed to the public during weddings, special events, and receptions. A  long circular drive to the covered Grand Entrance is perfect for carriage or limousine arrival and departures. Once it opens, the Bible Meditation Garden will also be available for outdoor weddings. A huge parking lot adjacent to the building’s beautifully manicured grounds, private dressing areas for the bride and groon, a Steinway Baby Grand piano, and Guest Coat Check are all available. One neat little perk is that on the couple’s one-year anniversary they can have a private remembrance including complimentary cake and roses.

All in all, I spent a delightful two hours and still didn’t get to see everything there was to see. I will definitely return! For those interested, the address is Museum of Biblical Art, 7500 Park Lane, Dallas, TX 75225. Tel: 214-368-4622 or visit them online at http://www.biblicalarts.org
